B6, B12, and the whole complex are practically synonymous with energy support — which is exactly why taking them at night is a gamble. B vitamins are cofactors in neurotransmitter synthesis. Coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10) is another one that flies under the radar. It's marketed heavily for heart health and cellular energy production — and it works. That's the problem. Taking CoQ10 in the evening can extend the time it takes to fall asleep in some users, particularly those already sensitive to stimulant-adjacent compounds.
Neurotransmitter Competition: When Your Sleep Supplements Fight Each Other
Here's where things get genuinely counterintuitive. You might be taking supplements specifically to support sleep — 5-HTP, L-tryptophan, melatonin — and still sleeping terribly. The reason could be that these compounds are competing for the same transport mechanisms in your gut and blood-brain barrier.
Both 5-HTP and L-tryptophan rely on large neutral amino acid transporters (LNAAs) to cross into the brain. Even ashwagandha isn't universally sedating. In some individuals, particularly those with thyroid sensitivity, it can have a mild stimulating effect. If you've been taking it nightly and your sleep has gotten worse rather than better, that's a relationship worth questioning.
How to Audit Your Evening Stack
