Most people build a supplement routine once and then kind of... leave it alone. Same bottles, same doses, same timing — January through December, year after year. It's understandable. Consistency feels like discipline.

But here's the thing: your body isn't running the same program in February that it is in August. Sunlight exposure, physical activity, immune demand, sweat rate, dietary patterns — all of these shift with the seasons, and they all influence what your body actually needs from a nutritional support standpoint.

Thinking about your supplement stack as a seasonal, evolving practice rather than a permanent fixture isn't just smart — it's how you get the most out of what you're taking. Let's walk through each quarter.

Fall (September – November): Fortify Before the Storm

Fall is the nutritional equivalent of storm prep. Days are getting shorter, temperatures are dropping, and the immune challenges that come with cold and flu season are ramping up. This is the time to be proactive rather than reactive.

Vitamin D deserves your attention right now, before winter makes it a crisis. As sunlight hours decline and most Americans move their activities indoors, skin synthesis of vitamin D drops significantly. For most of the US — especially anywhere north of Atlanta — meaningful UVB exposure becomes nearly impossible from October through March. Getting your vitamin D levels tested in early fall and adjusting supplementation accordingly is one of the highest-leverage moves you can make.

Zinc is worth revisiting in fall. This mineral plays a central role in immune cell development and inflammatory response. Research suggests that adequate zinc status is associated with more resilient immune function, and fall is when deficiencies can start to matter in a practical, day-to-day sense. If you've been slack about zinc through summer, now's the time to get consistent.

Elderberry and vitamin C aren't glamorous, but they have genuine research support for immune function. Adding these to your fall rotation — particularly if you work in a shared office, have kids in school, or travel frequently — is a reasonable seasonal addition.

What to consider reducing: If you were heavy on electrolyte supplementation through a sweaty summer, fall is a natural time to dial that back unless you're still training intensely outdoors.

Winter (December – February): Double Down on Light and Mood

Winter is vitamin D's most important season — and not just for bone health. Emerging research continues to link vitamin D status with mood regulation, immune resilience, and even cardiovascular markers. For the roughly 40% of Americans estimated to have suboptimal vitamin D levels, winter is when that gap does the most damage.

For those in northern states especially, the math is stark: no meaningful sun exposure for months, combined with a diet that rarely provides adequate vitamin D naturally (fatty fish and fortified foods help, but rarely enough). Consistent supplementation through winter isn't optional for most people — it's a baseline.

Magnesium often gets overlooked in winter despite being involved in over 300 enzymatic reactions, including those related to sleep quality and stress response. Winter tends to bring disrupted sleep patterns, holiday stress, and reduced physical activity — all contexts where magnesium support can be genuinely useful. Magnesium glycinate is a popular form for those prioritizing sleep and relaxation.

Omega-3 fatty acids are worth emphasizing in winter, particularly for people who experience seasonal mood shifts. The research on omega-3s and mood is nuanced, but the data on EPA and DHA supporting brain and cardiovascular health is strong enough that winter is a good time to make sure you're not letting this one slip.

What to watch: Winter diets in America tend to skew heavier and less varied — fewer fresh fruits and vegetables, more processed comfort foods. A quality multivitamin can help bridge gaps that emerge when your produce intake drops.

Spring (March – May): Reset, Reassess, Reactivate

Spring is the supplement equivalent of a system audit. You're coming out of the most nutritionally challenging season, days are getting longer, and activity levels typically start climbing. It's a natural moment to reassess what's still serving you.

Get bloodwork done in spring. If you've been supplementing vitamin D all winter, spring is an ideal time to test your levels and see if your dosage was appropriate. You might find you've overshot, or that you need to adjust upward. Either way, data beats guesswork.

As sunlight returns, you may be able to reduce or pause vitamin D supplementation depending on your lifestyle, latitude, and test results. This isn't the case for everyone, but for people who get meaningful outdoor exposure in spring and summer, the body's natural synthesis capacity starts contributing meaningfully again.

Iron deserves attention for anyone who ramps up exercise in spring. Endurance training increases iron demand, and spring is when a lot of people go from couch to 5K training plan. Women of reproductive age and regular runners are particularly worth monitoring here.

Probiotics and gut support can be a smart spring focus. Winter's dietary patterns often aren't great for gut microbiome diversity. Adding a quality probiotic or increasing prebiotic fiber intake in spring supports the digestive foundation that everything else — including supplement absorption — depends on.

Summer (June – August): Hydrate, Replenish, Protect

Summer shifts the focus to what you're losing rather than what you're missing. Heat, sweat, and elevated physical activity create a fundamentally different nutritional environment than any other season.

Electrolytes move to the front of the stack in summer. Sodium, potassium, and magnesium all leave the body through sweat, and the losses compound quickly during outdoor activity in heat. Sports drinks handle some of this, but they're often loaded with sugar and light on magnesium. Dedicated electrolyte supplements give you more control over what you're actually replenishing.

Vitamin D supplementation can often be reduced or paused for people who spend regular time outdoors in summer — particularly in the southern US. Sun exposure during peak hours can generate significant vitamin D synthesis. That said, sunscreen use (which is non-negotiable for skin health) does reduce synthesis, so the picture isn't simple. If you're conscientious about sun protection, you may still need some supplemental vitamin D even in summer.

Antioxidants — vitamin C, vitamin E, and astaxanthin — get more relevant in summer for people with high sun and outdoor exposure. UV radiation increases oxidative stress, and antioxidant support can help manage that load.

What to consider tapering: Heavy immune-support stacks designed for fall and winter (elderberry, high-dose zinc) aren't typically necessary through summer unless you have a specific reason.

Building the Habit of Seasonal Thinking

You don't need to do a complete supplement overhaul four times a year. The idea is simpler than that: at the start of each season, spend 10 minutes asking whether your current stack still makes sense for where you are, what you're doing, and what your body is likely facing over the next three months.
