Your Supplement Stack Has a Shelf Life — and It Resets Every Season

Spring and Allergy Season: The Immune Pivot

Summer is the season where electrolyte supplementation moves from optional to genuinely important for active people. This isn't just about hardcore athletes — anyone exercising outdoors in July heat is losing meaningful amounts of minerals that affect muscle function, hydration, and energy.
On the flip side, summer is when many people naturally boost their vitamin D levels through sun exposure, which means continuing your winter D dose without reassessment could push you toward excess — especially if you're already taking a therapeutic dose. A brief check-in with your healthcare provider around late May or June to assess whether your dose needs to come down is a reasonable seasonal habit.
CoQ10 is another summer-relevant supplement for active individuals. Heat increases oxidative stress on cells, and CoQ10 plays a direct role in mitochondrial energy production and antioxidant defense. If you're ramping up activity in summer, it's a reasonable addition to consider.
Fall: Priming for Immune Season
Fall is your prep window — the season before cold and flu season hits in earnest. What you do in September and October can meaningfully affect how your immune system handles November through February.
Vitamin D supplementation typically warrants a gradual increase starting in early fall as sun exposure decreases. Zinc becomes relevant here too — it plays a key role in immune cell function and is one of the better-researched minerals for reducing the duration of illness when taken at the first sign of symptoms.
Probiotics are worth revisiting in fall as well. Your gut microbiome composition shifts with dietary changes, and fall tends to bring a transition away from the fresh, fiber-rich foods of summer. Supporting microbial diversity going into winter has downstream effects on immune resilience.
How to Actually Adjust Your Stack
You don't need to overhaul everything every three months. A few practical habits make seasonal recalibration manageable:
Do a quarterly 'stack audit.' Every season, spend ten minutes asking: What's my sun exposure like right now? How much am I sweating? Am I eating more or less fresh food? Am I entering or exiting a high-illness period? Your answers should inform your supplement priorities.
